What does “evidence-based” mean at The Speech Rehab Centre?

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a core value at The Speech Rehab Centre. However, we understand it slightly differently from traditional definitions. EBP is often described as the intersection of client preferences, clinical expertise and research evidence—overlapping but distinct components. In this view, evidence sits outside clinical practice and is something clinicians apply to their work.

At The Speech Rehab Centre we ensure that evidence is infused within our clinical expertise. Evidence does not sit apart from practice but is enacted, interpreted, and continually reshaped through clinical reasoning and interaction with our clients.

We believe research evidence and clinical expertise are inseparable because:

  1. Our practice is built on research. The Speech Rehab Centre was founded by research-trained clinicians who have spent years integrating evidence directly into therapy.

  2. Evidence is always interpreted by a person. Research findings are understood through a human lens, not in isolation.

  3. Therapy happens person-to-person. Evidence-based practice is delivered through the therapist–client relationship, not as a separate process. Each session involves hypothesis testing, measurement and evidence gathering.

  4. Clinical expertise guides what evidence matters. A therapist must judge which research is relevant for each unique client. With the rise of precision medicine, truly knowing the client is essential to applying evidence well.

Here is what the value of "evidence-based" looks like at The Speech Rehab Centre:
